Possible Cause:: Invalid SSL Certificate, Incorrect System time\date, Incorrect Timezone
If the SSL certificate is not valid or does not match the one that Windows requires this error message can occur. If the time is displayed wrong on your machine then the SSL certificate will not be able to authenticate either.
Check system time\date and timezone
Look down inside the system tray where the time is in the right hand corner -> Right click and select Adjust time/date.
- Ensure the date and time is the current time and date of your location, if you are unsure please visit The World Clock
- If the time needs changing click on Change date and time.. -> Set the date and time.
- Check the timezone, if it does not match select Change time zone.
Once these settings have been confirmed inside the Date and Time settings panel click on the tab Internet Time -> Then select Change settings…
- Tick Synchronize with an internet time server.
- Set the server to time.windows.com
- Click on Update now.
- Wait for it to say the synchronize has been done. (you might get an error at this stage, its fine to ignore for now)
Open up command prompt as administrator and enter in the following commands one by one:
net stop w32time
W32tm /unregister
W32tm /register
net start w32time
w32tm /resync
Restart the machine and try Windows updates again.
